Stop the Violence!
August 05, 2011
In June 2007 the former Housing of the City of Las Vegas and Safe Nest (temporary assistance for domestic violence crisis) came together to provide domestic violence awareness training to the residents of the housing authority through the "Promotora" Training curriculum. The partnership continued to grow each year providing the housing authority residents with safety planning, one-on-one counseling, advocacy, emergency shelter and most importantly prevention. The partnership cultivated through one of the largest mergers ever taken place by a housing authority. The three housing authorities in Las Vegas; Clark County Housing Authority, Housing Authority of the City of Las Vegas, and North Las Vegas Housing Authority merged to become the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority.
The number of domestic violence cases continues to grow throughout the state of Nevada. Unfortunately, in the last ten years we have been in the top five as well as number one for the past three years running. Safe Nest and SNRHA have conducted many discussions over the past four years on ways to create a comprehensive DV training for SNRHA staff; establishing housings very own advocate, as well as continued preventative training for SNRHA residents all with the objective of reducing the number of domestic violence incidents occurring on SHRHA property.
"Stop the Violence Don't Be Silent"
Unfortunately, during the later part of 2010 housing experienced several disturbing and tragic incidents which brought ever more attention to domestic violence. SNRHA decided a strong stand needed to be demonstrated. In November, 2010 SNRHA asked community leaders, police departments, community advocacy organizations, non-profits and residents to come together and form a team in response to several tragic incidents. Through this collaborative effort our Domestic Violence Prevention Initiative was born. Since then The Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority and Safe Nest have applied for the Nevada Office of the Attorney General 2010 Stop Program Sub-Grant and received funding for a community outreach advocate specifically for SNRHA residents; SNRHA Board of Commissioners, staff, resident councils, security, and volunteers have received DV training; two (2) PSA's have been made to educate the public; posters in both English and Spanish have been made and distributed presenting the collaboration of Safe Nest, Safe House, Safe Village Initiative, Metropolitan PD, Henderson PD, North Las Vegas PD, Mesquite PD, Boulder PD, Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence, and SNRHA.
Our goal is to reduce the number of domestic violence crimes and increase the awareness of preventative measures which can possibly save lives.

Bed Bug Awareness
January 6, 2011
Unfortunately, bed bugs are on the rise across North America, Europe, and Australia. Las Vegas is no exception, however, the SNRHA is very proactive in the fight against bed bugs and one of the ways to help prevent them is through a little bit of knowledge and awareness. For more information see: Bed Bug Brochure - English or Chinche de las camas - Español.
